My rule is simple: show the best part of the product.
For a cupcake, that may be the frosting and decoration rather than the paper base. For a handmade soap, it may be the textured face rather than the plain side. For a chocolate assortment, it may be a controlled view of several pieces rather than the entire tray.

Making the Window Too Large

SBS Paperboard for Clean, Premium Presentation

PET and other traditional clear films are widely chosen because they provide good clarity, durability and moisture resistance at a practical cost.
Their main disadvantage is end-of-life complexity. A paperboard box with an attached plastic window may require the customer to separate the materials before recycling, depending on local collection rules.
PVC may be available in some applications, but brands should ask the supplier exactly which film is being proposed and whether it matches their product, compliance and disposal requirements.
PLA and Other Plant-Based Films
PLA can provide strong visual clarity while supporting a plant-based material story. However, it may be more brittle than conventional film in certain constructions and generally requires appropriate composting conditions rather than simply breaking down in any backyard or landfill environment.

Cellulose-Based Film
Cellulose film can complement natural kraft packaging and may suit brands seeking a fiber-derived window direction.

My Practical Verdict
There is no universally perfect window material.
Traditional plastic films often offer the strongest balance of clarity, moisture resistance, durability and cost. Plant-based or cellulose alternatives may better support a brand’s material story, but they can introduce higher cost, handling limitations and disposal questions.

What Makes the Design Look Overly Busy
Problems begin when every finishing technique competes at once.
Heavy patterns, several foil colors, gloss textures, crowded typography and a complicated window shape can pull attention away from the product. The result often looks more expensive to produce but less premium in hand.
My preference is to choose one hero element. With this structure, that hero should usually be the product visible through the window.
A Bakery Example: Visibility Changed More Than the Box
One bakery I observed moved from conventional packaging into gable boxes with window cutouts. The change was not simply cosmetic.
The products became easier to see at the point of purchase. Customers could immediately notice decoration and freshness without asking staff to open the package. The built-in handle also made the order feel more suitable for gifting and carrying.

An auto-lock or crash-lock bottom arrives pre-glued and opens quickly during assembly. It can provide a convenient and dependable base for repeated packing when designed for the product weight.
1-2-3 Bottom
A 1-2-3 bottom uses interlocking flaps that are folded in sequence. It can work well for many products, but staff must assemble it correctly and the structure must be tested under the actual load.
Before production, confirm:
Do not judge the structure using an empty sample. Test it fully packed.
Request a Structural Sample Before a Large Run
A physical structural sample catches problems that a screen cannot.
For a new gable box, I recommend testing an unprinted sample cut from the proposed paper stock whenever the structure, window or product fit is unfamiliar.
Place the real product inside and check:

A simple counter-height drop test can also expose weak tabs, product movement or window contact. The goal is not to simulate every shipping condition. It is to catch obvious structural problems before they are repeated across the full order.
When exact color matching is critical, a finished printed proof may also be worthwhile. This is particularly important for cosmetics, luxury products and brands using sensitive neutral tones or precise corporate colors.
Build the Artwork on the Correct Dieline
Never design a production order around a random gable-box template downloaded without confirming the dimensions.

Keep logos, important text and product information at least 1/8 inch away from crease lines, cut edges and the window opening unless the printer provides a different safe-area requirement.
