An oversized box requires more board, creates more empty volume, and may need extra tissue, paper filler, cushioning, or dividers. Decorative layers can also add material without improving protection, shelf use, or customer handling.

Keep Materials Simple

Logos, product information, barcodes, instructions, and full-color artwork can be printed across paperboard, kraft, corrugated, bags, and other compatible paper surfaces. Water-based and soy ink choices may also support lower-impact print requirements where they suit the substrate and production method.

The important question is whether a finish changes the end-of-life characteristics of the pack.

Heavy laminations, mixed-material decorative layers, plastic windows, and some specialty finishes may complicate an otherwise straightforward paper package. If recyclability is central to the brief, make that priority clear before finishing decisions are locked.

Sustainability language should describe the actual packaging specification.

“Eco-friendly” alone tells the buyer very little.

More useful statements identify the material or design decision directly, such as:

  • made with recycled-content paperboard
  • produced using a recyclable paper structure
  • right-sized to reduce excess material
  • uses a paperboard insert instead of a plastic tray
  • made with kraft paper
  • designed without unnecessary secondary packaging

Avoid assuming that brown kraft is automatically recycled, that paper is universally recyclable, or that a package is compostable because it looks natural.

Recycling availability can vary by material combination and local collection systems. Food residue, coatings, adhesives, laminations, and mixed components may also change disposal requirements.

If FSC Chain of Custody, recycled-content documentation, or another specific sourcing requirement matters to the project, include that requirement when requesting pricing so the exact material can be reviewed rather than relying on a general sustainability label.

Match the Sales Channel

Lower-impact packaging decisions change between retail and ecommerce.
